On Aug 26, PG Zain dominated Liquid Hungrybox 3-1 in the first set of grand finals in the Marth-Jigglypuff match-up to win Shine 2018. While Hungrybox had previously shown a solid grasp of the Marth match-up, Zain managed to systematically dismantle his approach with a combination of patience, flawless punishes, and technical set-ups. On his way to grand finals, he took down DIG Lucky, ALG N0ne, and C9 Mang0. This marks the first major tournament win for Zain, as well as the first and second time he’s beaten Hungrybox in a tournament set. In addition to Zain’s big win, Shine
On August 5, TSM Leffen fulfilled a 2 year old self-prophecy by obliterating Alliance Armada 3-0 in the grand finals of Super Smash Bros Melee at EVO 2018. The set was notable for its high speed, technical gameplay from both opponents, but Leffen’s current domination of Armada’s Fox in games 1 and 2, as well as his historic domination of Armada’s Peach in game 3 led to him sweeping the finals without losing a set. Leffen’s run all throughout the tournament was dominant, with him adapting to and destroying Liquid Hungrybox over the course of a 2-1 set, and making
On May 20, Liquid Hungrybox bested PG Plup in a comeback showing during the second set of grand finals at Get On My Level 2018. Despite having lost to Plup 3-1 in winners finals, Hungrybox, in what has come to be standard fashion, adapted, taking the first set closely 3-2 and the second set solidly 3-1 to win the tournament. The rest of the tournament featured lots of interesting play, with FOX Mew2King debuting a Jigglypuff against Tempo Axe’s Pikachu, taking a game, but ultimately losing in a close 3-2 showing. Canadian wunderkind Moky demonstrated his prowess in the Fox
On May 6, FOX Mew2King upset Alliance Armada 3-1 in the first set of grand finals at Smash Summit 6. Despite a lifetime losing record against Armada, previously going 4-23, Mew2King managed to knock Armada into losers bracket in the first round, and then eliminate him in grand finals, in two dominant 3-1 sets. On his way to grand finals, Mew2King also defeated TSM Leffen and PG Zain, both in 3-1 sets. Throughout the tournament, the only set he lost was to PG Plup in the pools matches to determine seeding. This marks the first time in his career Mew2King
On March 25, Liquid Hungrybox defeated C9 Mango in the first set of grand finals to win Full Bloom 4. While the matches appeared close, Hungrybox was able to overcome C9 Mango’s aggressive, flashy play to take the set 3-1. This continues a winning streak for Hungrybox, having won every 2018 tournament he’s entered except for Genesis 5 back in January. Additionally, he has also not dropped a set since Genesis 5, winning every tournament since from the winners side of grand finals, showing complete dominance over the competition. Despite the characteristic win from Hungrybox, the rest of the tournament
On January 21, PG Plup edged out Liquid Hungrybox 3-2 in the second set of grand finals at Genesis 5 to take his first ever super-major. While Hungrybox appeared to dominate Plup in the first set, carrying over momentum from losers bracket to cleanly 3-0 him, Plup adjusted his play, slowing down the pace of the match and controlling the neutral with strong movement, clutching it out in a last-stock-last-hit scenario. This victory comes hot on the heels of the 2017 SSBM Rank list, placing Plup at 5th for the year, and Hungrybox at 1st. Plup’s monumental win represents the
On December 3, San Diego Melee fans were shocked to see two out-of-region players — Phoenix1 Duck, Michigan Samus player and ninth seed, and Zain, MD/VA Marth player and sixth seed — duke it out in grand finals of Pat’s House 3 over higher seeded favourites such as CLG SFAT, Lucky, CLG PewPewU, and G2 Westballz. Zain managed to put up a formidable performance, bringing the first set of grand finals to a 2-2 tie, but ultimately fell short in the last game against Duck’s methodical, bait-heavy play. In a refreshing change of pace for the scene, both finalists had meteoric
