I’m not entirely sure what happened over the past week, but someone from #teamtrees might tell you there has been an uptick in kindness coming from the one percent.
The charity #teamtrees, has an explicit goal of planting 20,000,000 trees by January 1st, 2020. For every dollar someone donates, that goes towards planting one tree in a forest somewhere that could use more trees.
If you scroll down the list of donors to the charity, you may start to notice recognizable names from the tech industry like Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter donating 150,000 trees. If you look closely at the dates the donations were made, you can see that the day after, Susan Wojcicki, CEO of YouTube donated 200,000 trees.
After a short inquiry by Marques Brownlee on October 30th, 2019, we saw Elon Musk donate $1,000,000 USD, to plant 1,000,000 trees. The donation, which seemed to be given in the classic meme-worthy Musk-manner over Twitter, has sparked a new nickname for Elon (that he gave himself)… Treelon.
You can look at the website. He donated the trees “For Treebeard”. But then you have a look at the comments that are saying something along the lines of “I bet someone is going to donate 1,000,001 trees”, and someone did.
Tobi Lutke, CEO of Shopify, has officially donated 1,000,001 trees “For the Lorax”. Is this some type of petty billionaires squabble? Is it an inside joke among the higher class as they continually 1-up each other? I don’t think we’ll ever know for sure.
