It is that time of year once again, a new season of anime is right around the corner! In the fledgling days of April we begin the 2018 spring anime season. With many series returning this season there’s a bevy of choices for what are the “must watch” shows. Obviously respect must be paid to fan favourites like Steins;Gate 0, and shonen powerhouse Boku no Hero Academia, but for this season our must watch picks will focus on two resurrected classics and a show that is newly adapted from a popular manga franchise.
The Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These
Premiering on April 3, The Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These is the first season of a new anime adaptation of the highly venerated Galactic Heroes series. A franchise whose story has been told for over a decade through broadcasted anime, OVAs and movies, this new adaptation will start fresh for those of us that weren’t around in 1988 to watch it from the beginning. The Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These is a space opera set in the distant future where two warring factions, The Galactic Empire and the Free Planet Alliance, vie for control over the galaxy. In the 150th year of the war two brilliant young commanders emerge looking to settle things once and for all for their respective side. This first season will run for twelve episodes and will be streamed on Crunchyroll.
Making waves in the world of manga over the last few years Golden Kamuy has received an anime adaptation that will begin airing on April 9. Having been nominated for Best Manga in the 2017 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, and winning the Manga Taisho Award one year prior in 2016, Golden Kamuy is a strong pick that should please existing fans and newcomers alike. The plot of the show takes place after the Russo-Japanese War, which ended in 1905, and follows the story of former soldier Saichi Sugimoto. Having stumbled across a treasure map tattooed upon a criminal, Sugimoto must go to Japan’s northern region of Hokkaido to claim a cache of gold. However, Hokkaido’s harsh winter climate forces him into an unlikely partnership with a local Ainu girl, Ashiripal, and together they battle the elements, and criminals, to obtain unimaginable wealth. Golden Kamuy will also be streamed on Crunchyroll.
Cutie Honey Universe
From the legendary manga author Go Nagai, the man behind Devilman, and Mazinger Z, comes another revival of his mid-70’s shonen manga Cutie Honey. Cutie Honey Universe is the latest adaptation in a long standing lineage from this popular franchise, helping commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of Nagai’s works. Accompanied by Mazinger Z/INFINITY, and one of last season’s must watch shows Devilman: Crybaby, Cutie Honey Universe will be the last of Nagai’s three works planned to air this year. Cutie Honey is a very important franchise in the history of manga and anime as Nagai himself claims that the main character, Honey Kisaragi, was the first female shonen manga protagonist, while others mark it as the genesis point for the magical girl genre. Cutie Honey Universe follows Honey Kisaragi, an extremely humanlike android whose ability to transform into numerous stylish disguises gives her access to special powers. Following a run in with a shadowy and villainous organization known as Panther Claw, Honey makes it her mission to bring them to justice.
