Idol fans get ready, there’s a new group headed your way this spring and its members are part girl and part racehorse. On January 25 the first commercial for the Uma Musume Pretty Derby anime was revealed, and for those of you that have been following this story over the past two years it must be hard to believe that this is finally coming to fruition.
In 2016 Cygames, the Japanese video game developer behind Granblue Fantasy, released a trailer for their upcoming game Uma Musume Pretty Derby. While it is not out of place for Japanese anime, and game developers, to anthropomorphize objects as cute anime girls — or perhaps more notably, Japanese World War II warships (Kantai Collection, Azure Lane) — it was a little out of left field when Cygames chose to combine pop idols with racing horses. The original trailer, which now has near one million views, caught many anime fans by surprise with what many perceived as sheer absurdity.
The show’s tie in anime will have a premiere date sometime in April, making it a part of the 2018 spring anime season. There are also some notable names tied to the project including the seiyuu for the main character Special Week, Azumi Waki (Maika Sakuranomiya from Blend S), and the voice for Vodka, Ayaka Ohashi (Uzuki Shimamura from The iDolm@ster Cinderella Girls). The show focuses on up and coming idols as they train to compete in the “Twinkle Series,” a national sports and entertainment show in which their singing and racing prowess will be put to the test.
At the time of writing, the companion mobile game has no official release date, but will likely be out sometime in 2018 on both Android, and iOS.
