If you weren’t already excited about the upcoming 2018 winter anime season, you’re about to be. The official website for the Netflix Original Devilman Crybaby has been updated, and with that comes a new trailer, key visual, and the all important release date. Devilman Crybaby will premiere simultaneously in 190 countries and territories on January 5 2018. Devilman joins an ever-growing list of shows premiering in January, a list which has come to include: Kyoto Animation’s Violet Evergarden (also premiering on Netflix in Japan), Studio Trigger and A-1 Picture’s collaborative project DARLING in the FRANXX, and Studio Deen’s Junji Ito “Collection”.

This new adaption of Go Nagai’s Devilman manga will mark the author’s 50th anniversary as a creator, his first work being Meakashi Polikichi in 1967. Nagai later produced the original Devilman manga in 1972; since then, it has become widely popular and recieved several spinoffs, crossovers, remakes, and a film adaptation. The plot of the ten episode Netflix series focuses on protagonist Akira Fudo, who after learning from his best friend Ryo Asuka that an ancient race of demons has come to take back earth from humanity, fuses himself with a demon. The result is Devilman, a boy with the power of a demon and a soul of a human being. Now Akira (not that one) and Devilman must fight to save humanity from annihilation.
