One of anime’s most venerated series will be receiving a new iteration in the Spring 2018 season. Based on Yoshiki Tanaka’s 1982 novel of the same name, the science fiction space opera premiered in 1988 and continued on until 1997. The main story line spans one hundred and ten OVA episodes, with an additional fifty-two OVA episodes worth of side stories, along with three movies. In short, it’s kind of a big deal.
In the distant future two factions – the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance – fight a long standing, 150 year war, that has spread across the galaxy. However, it seems like things are about to change as two incredible strategists, the “Invincible Genius” Reinhard von Lohengramm and the “Invincible Magician” Yang Wen Li, each look to end the long standing conflict and secure victory for their respective side.
The new anime, Legend of the Galactic Heroes – Die Neue These: Kaigou will be produced by Production I.G., the studio behind the anime classic Ghost in the Shell and the 2013 mega-hit Attack on Titan. The new anime will not just be a testing of the waters either: at the announcement event on September 20 the “second season” of the show, Legend of the Galactic Heroes – Die Neue These: Seiran, was announced as well. This second season will be made up of a trilogy of movies which will be in theatres sometime in 2019.
