Ezra Koenig, the lead singer and guitarist from Vampire Weekend, has partnered with Netflix to release his very own anime series. The show has a star-studded cast which features Jaden Smith as a rich, magically-powered, pink-haired, demon-slaying angsty teenager who likes shopping and field hockey. Nothing new there. Jaden is accompanied by his robot mecha-butler Jude Law, his aunt and mentor Susan Sarandon, and Steve Buscemi whose role has not yet been disclosed. Jaden hangs out with his inseparable friends The Kid Mero and Desus Nice as he tries to find himself while navigating the complexities of life, all the while trying to stay one step ahead of his arch-rival, Jason Schwartzman, who plays Neo Yokio’s number one most eligible bachelor.
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwc6fTnsdBI?rel=0]Neo Yokio, both the title of the show and where the anime takes place, is described as the greatest city on earth. It’s the most populous agglomeration in North America, and seems to be a hybrid of the world’s most famous metropoles from what we can gather from the trailer. The show seems like it could be both magical and ridiculous in trying to push the boundaries of American-made anime, and may attempt to normalize America’s place in anime culture.
Neo Yokio will debut as a Netflix Original on September 22nd, and you will be able to watch it at this link.
