Nintendo Confirms SNES Classic Mini

Too Far Gone | Super NES Classic

After many months of rumours, Nintendo has confirmed that a SNES Classic Mini will be released in 2017. Similar to last year’s NES Classic Mini, the SNES version will come pre-loaded with classic games and support for HDTVs. One benefit for gamers is the inclusion of a second controller; the NES Classic Mini came packaged with only one and additional controllers proved notoriously difficult to find, so the inclusion of a second controller is a nice bonus.

The following games will be available on the console:

  • Contra III: The Alien Wars
  • Donkey Kong Country
  • EarthBound
  • Final Fantasy III
  • F-Zero
  • Kirby Super Star
  • Kirby’s Dream Course
  • The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
  • Mega Man X
  • Secret of Mana
  • Star Fox
  • Star Fox 2
  • Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
  • Super Castlevania IV
  • Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts
  • Super Mario Kart
  • Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
  • Super Mario World
  • Super Metroid
  • Super Punch-Out!!
  • Yoshi’s Island

Of note are Star Fox 2 and Yoshi’s Island. Star Fox 2 was never officially released, despite development on the game being seemingly complete. Nintendo added that in order to unlock Star Fox 2, players will need to complete the first level in the original game. Additionally, the SNES Mini Classic marks the first time that Yoshi’s Island has been re-released. Previous re-releases of the game have been based upon the GBA remake Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi’s Island, which featured graphical and musical alterations.

The launch of last year’s NES Classic Mini faced scrutiny from fans due to very high demand and a lack of available stock. This time around Nintendo has promised to produce “significantly more” SNES Classic Mini consoles.

The SNES Classic Mini will be available on September 29 at an MSRP of $79.99. Check out the official site here.
